Are you the type of person that really likes a routine? I definitely am! Today, I’m going to share how I was able to get out of my slump by applying these 5 simple steps toward a positive life!
Once I get in a groove or a flow, it’s really easy for me to stick with it. This is a phenomenal thing when my groove is a positive one, but if I get caught up in bad habits (which I certainly do from time to time), it’s super easy for me to get stuck in that slump and then my groove can be a really downward sliding slope.
If you’ve been reading my recent posts or following along on social media, you know that my husband and I moved in December and have been living through renovations in our home for about 3 months. We had no kitchen and even went without bathrooms for a while. It was tough and I still can’t believe we lived in the house through all of that.
My problem is that when I start to let things go, I really let it go. So during those three months, I slowly but surely started to loosen the fitness and healthy living reigns until all of a sudden I found myself 10 pounds heavier, lethargic, lazy, unmotivated…you catch my drift.
Because I had to miss so many workouts, it was easy for me to just fall into that negative mindset trap and say to myself “oh well, I missed the last 4 days, so what’s only 1 day of working out going to do”. OR “Oh well, I didn’t work out today, so why would I eat healthy anyway?”
Not only was I down on myself about my appearance, but it really played a toll mentally as well. I used to wake up feeling refreshed and ready to take on anything in my path and recently it’s been quite the opposite.
And so a few weeks ago I came to the realization that I needed to stop throwing myself a pitty party. I could choose to do nothing about it and feel negative and down on myself OR I could wake up and feel refreshed and revitalized like I used to, which I missed sooooooo much!
So being the extremist that I am, I did a 2 week “cleanse”, where I completely eliminated alcohol, medications (such as ibuprofen, allergy pills), and all inflammatory spices and foods. After eliminating many things from my diet, I started to feel incredible.
The mental benefits far outweighed the physical benefits as well. I stuck with something for 2 weeks and it felt AMAZING. I did lose a little weight, but more importantly I noticed that I had more energy, I had more clarity, I was more focused, I could power through my workouts and perform better. All of these go hand in hand.
Now, I’m not saying that if you’re spiraling downward you have to take it to the extreme and go on a detox for 2 weeks, but I do suggest that you start to take notice of things that make you feel good, rather than focus on things that make you feel bad. I just needed that extreme realization to help me hone in on why I was feeling so bad about myself.
So, try it. Make a commitment for 2 weeks to do something. Start with these small action steps to start creating a more positive, productive, and healthy lifestyle:
- START by writing down a few goals that you are going to commit to achieving over the next 2 weeks. Set a workout goal and set a healthy eating target.
- START really taking time to reflect on your feelings after you workout. Are you tired and sweaty? Yes. BUT, do you feel incredible like you can conquer the world? YES! Trust me, you’ll start to associate working out with feeling amazing!
- START jotting down how you feel after you make a healthier eating choice. Do you feel more energized after eating certain things? Do you think that your food choices are helping you perform better or recover quicker?
- START applying a positive mindset. If you have a hiccup or life gets in the way, get up the next day and get back at it again.
- START…see a theme here? Just START! If you’re feeling bad and stuck in a slump than START doing something about it.
Let’s make a deal. Let’s STOP self sabotaging and START taking little baby action steps toward living a better life! Why wouldn’t we want to do everything in our power to make us feel absolutely incredible about ourselves??
A healthy lifestyle involves much more than just eating good food and working out. A healthy lifestyle is much more than having a 6-pack or washboard abs. A healthy lifestyle is having a positive mind, positive thoughts, positive vibes. So start there. Start doing positive things that help lead you toward a positive life 🙂
